Explore Morocco’s Imperial Cities

Morocco has some of the oldest and most well preserved cities in Africa. With many winding alleyways, impressive open-air markets, walled cities, castles, Koranic schools, gardens and central squares there is something for everyone. Visit Fez, Meknes, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Safi, Essaoueria, and Agadir and find out for yourself how rich these ancient cities are. Beautiful Fez recently had it’s 1,200th birthday and has the best tannery in Morocco to visit, seaside Agadir was leveled by an earthquake in 1968 and has been completely rebuilt with large seaside boardwalks, Marrakesh has many old palaces and the famous and huge Jamaa El Fna square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where one can see, buy, and eat virtually anything, the sardine production center of Africa Safi has surfing and is the pottery capitol of Morocco. Rabat is the green city and political capitol of Morocco, it has a lot of gardens and you can visit the ancient Hessan Mosque next to the King’s Palace. Meknes lies in between many lush green rolling hills and is home to the oldest Roman city in Morocco, Volubilous, founded in 3 B.C. Essaoueria is a small relaxing city with a large beach and constant wind. Essaoueria is surrounded by Argan forests and has many Argan cooperatives which sell products made with the amazing argan oil, and also has many handicrafts especially woodworking with the Twia tree.

Imperial Cities

Example Itinerary:

1st day :
Arrive in Marrakech airport, hotel check-in.
2nd day:
From Marrakech through Casablanca to Rabat. Enter the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, and visit the Hassan Tower and Mohammed V Mausoleum, Chellah Gardens and Necropolis, and the Oudayas Kasbah overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. 5 hrs of travel
3rd day :
From Rabat through Meknes to Fez. In Meknes you will see the ancient Roman city of Volubilous, arrive in Fez and see the tanneries and explore the old city and Jewish Quarter (Mellah). 5 hrs of travel
4th day :
From Fez to Midelt. Visit all the beautiful monuments and explore more of this ancient city and then travel on to the tiny city of Midelt near the large Cedar forests. 5 hrs of travel
5th day :
From Midelt to Merzouga. Be dwarfed by the impressive towering walls of the Dades and Todra Gorges then head straight out into the Sahara to experience the best sand dunes Morocco has to offer a top a camel and then spend the night in a nomadic tent. 6 hrs of travel
6th day :
From Merzouga - Kelaa el M'Gouna – Ouarzazate. Wake up early in the morning to witness the breathtaking sunrise in the Sahara and return to the vehicles by camel. We will stop in the valley of the roses to see how rose water is made. We’ll finish up our day by arriving in Ouarzazate and visiting the Kasbah Tawrirt, built in 1930 by the powerful Glaoui chiefs and then have a walk through the city center. 6 hrs of travel
7th day :
From Ouarzazate through Ait Ben Haddou and over the Tichka Pass to Marrakesh. We will first see the film museums of Ouarzazate (Atlas Museums) where many Hollywood movies have been filmed. Be wowed by one of the oldest and best-preserved Kasbahs in Morocco. This Kasbah has appeared in more than 20 films including Lawrence of Arabia and Jesus of Nazareth. From there we will head over the backbone of the High Atlas Mountains on one of the curviest and most scenic roads in Morocco to arrive safe and sound in Marrakesh. In the infamous Marrakesh we’ll visit the famous Jamaa El Fna square, Ali Ben Youssef Medrersa (Koranic School), Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, and suqs (open-air markets) with a city guide. 5 hrs of travel
8th day : Marrakesh transfer to the Airport.
